Rupture of the anal sphincter is a serious complication of vaginal delivery. In the last three decades, the reported incidence in Sweden has increased from 0.5 to at least 3% of all deliveries ( 1 ). Despite primary surgical repair, 30–50% of the women develop anal incontinence and pain in the perineal region after delivery ( 2 - 7 ).
